Why a private league beats an open chat

Group chats are perfect for energy and terrible for record-keeping. Someone claims they “always had Norris on the podium.” Someone else edits a message after qualifying. A third person never saw the deadline. By Monday the rivalry is still there—but the evidence is not.

A private motorsport prediction league gives you four things a chat thread cannot: intentional membership (invites), hard pick deadlines, shared scoring rules, and standings plus receipts after the race. The banter stays. The bookkeeping becomes automatic.

A practical setup that survives round three

1. Name the room for one social graph. Office league, family league, and Discord crew should not share one standings table unless everyone wants that mix.
2. Invite on purpose. Share a code or join link—membership should feel intentional, not a public farming ladder.
3. Agree on scoring once, before race one. Point people at the scoring rules (/scoring) or calculator (/scoring/calculator). Near misses still score under the default model.

Position picks (typically P1–P5 plus fastest lap where enabled) are the backbone. Bonus picks—driver choice, over/under style questions, DNF counts, or other weekend markets—give the group something to argue about beyond the podium photo.
